Our picks at a glance
What to look for in a raincoat
Four things separate one rain shell from another: how far it covers the belly, whether it has a hood or just a high collar, whether there is a way to clip a leash to a harness without taking the coat off, and how it is sized. Water-resistant and waterproof are not the same claim, so we have kept each maker’s own wording.
Belly coverage first. Hurtta describes the wide belly flap on its Monsoon raincoat as shielding the belly from mud, sand and water splashes while also keeping the coat in place.
Hood or collar? Of the five coats here, only the two Canada Pooch raincoats list a hood. The others use a storm collar or an inner collar. Ruffwear’s Sun Shower vest has no hood at all, and its owners’ most common complaint is exactly that.
For harness-compatible openings, look for the words “leash portal”, “slit” or “zippered opening” on the listing. Ruffwear says its portal is made to fit over most harnesses. Hurtta says the Mudventure’s opening can be snapped closed so water doesn’t run down the back.
Sizing is where most online orders go wrong. Canada Pooch and Harbour Hound tell you to measure back length from the base of the neck, just below where the collar sits, to just above the tail, and chest girth around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. Hurtta sizes its coats by back length alone and says to go up a size if your dog falls between two. Ruffwear sizes by chest girth and says to size up for a relaxed fit or down for a snug one. Check each chart, because the measurements and units differ.
Canada Pooch Complete Coverage
A pull-over shell in water-repellent ripstop with a packable hood at the neck, a stretchy chest panel and an adjustable belt buckle. A zippered opening on the back is there for a leash clip, and the maker says it pairs with its harnesses. It is the only pick here with both a hood and a zipped back opening, and its size range runs to 36 for big dogs.
- Packable hood at the neck
- Zippered back opening for leash access
- Sizes 8 to 36, sized by back length and chest girth
- Maker rates it for “moderate rain” only
- The Canadian listing doesn’t spell out belly coverage
- No owner reviews on the listing we read
Canada Pooch Torrential Tracker
The yellow slicker-style coat. Canada Pooch lists full belly coverage, reflective trim, back pockets, a reinforced slit for the leash and a snap-back hood. The shell is water-resistant polyester over a lining that is 35% cotton. Sizes 8 to 16 have sleeves.
- Snap-back hood and full belly coverage
- Reinforced slit for a leash on a harness
- Lowest starting price of the five
- Water-resistant, not waterproof, and rated for moderate rain
- Part-cotton lining; the maker says spot clean or gentle cold wash
- No owner reviews on the listings we read
Ruffwear Sun Shower Coverall
A rain suit with a chest zipper, stretch sleeves on the front and rear legs, an oversized storm collar and a leash portal on the back made to go over most harnesses. It has reflective trim and a loop for a clip-on light. It is tailored and close to the body, which Ruffwear says you can loosen by sizing up.
- Full-body cover; reviewers say it covers belly and legs
- Leash portal made for most harnesses
- Chest zipper makes it easy on and off; 4.5 stars from 36 reviews
- No hood, only a storm collar
- Reviewers mention sizing gaps and fit issues on some body types
- Costs more than the Canada Pooch coats at their low end
Hurtta Mudventure Dog Coat
An unlined shell with a waterproof membrane and fully taped seams, built to fold into a pack. The leash opening snaps closed, the inner collar tightens behind the ears, and loops on the back legs, a stretch belt and an adjustable back length hold it in place. It has reflective piping front and back. Hurtta says it adds no warmth, which suits a wet October better than a cold January.
- Leash opening seals shut against rain
- Light and packable; 4.91 stars from 35 reviews on hurtta.com
- Sized by back length, one measurement, with a larger size if you are between
- No hood
- Unlined, so it adds no warmth
- Higher price tiers for bigger dogs: $155 for 40–55, $175 for 60–65
Canada Pooch Harness Raincoat
If your dog’s harness and coat never seem to cooperate, this one skips the problem. The raincoat has a built-in harness, so both go on in one step, and it drapes over the back with straps and buckles instead of pulling over the head. It has a water-resistant outer, full belly coverage and a non-shed lining, in sizes up to 110 lb.
- Harness and coat in one, no over-the-head step
- Full belly coverage
- Back length and chest girth chart for sizes 10 to 28
- The listing mentions no hood
- The maker says not to use it as a harness unless straps are fitted and every buckle is secure
- No owner reviews on the listing we read

How we chose
We started with raincoats sold to Canadian buyers with CAD prices, then read each maker’s product and sizing pages and, where a store shows them, owners’ reviews. We looked for four things: a hood or collar, belly coverage, a leash opening that works with a harness, and a clear measuring guide. We haven’t tested these coats ourselves, so fit, how well they keep out water and how they hold up are not tested claims. We don’t accept free products in exchange for picks, and none of the links on this page earn us a commission.
Questions
How do I measure my dog for a raincoat?
Canada Pooch and Harbour Hound say to measure back length from the base of the neck, right below where the collar sits, to just above the top of the tail. Then measure chest girth around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. Compare both with the size chart for the coat you want.
What if my dog is between sizes?
It depends on the maker. Hurtta says to choose the larger size. Ruffwear says to size up for a relaxed fit or down for a snug one. foufouBrands, a Canadian-sold brand we didn’t pick, says its full-coverage coat runs oversized.
Will a coat work with my dog’s harness?
Look for a leash portal or a back opening. Ruffwear says its portal fits over most harnesses, and Canada Pooch’s Complete Coverage has a zippered back opening. Hurtta says the Mudventure’s opening snaps closed. Canada Pooch’s Harness Raincoat has the harness built in.
