Our picks at a glance
Hammock, bench or cargo liner
Mud season is a fit problem before it’s a fabric problem. A cover that slides, gaps at the seat edge or blocks the seatbelt doesn’t protect much, however waterproof the label says it is. Three styles cover most cars, and each has a different job.
A hammock hangs between the front and rear headrests and covers the back seat, the floor gap and the backs of the front seats. A bench cover sits on the rear seat only. A cargo liner lines the boot of an SUV or hatchback. We looked at all three, but we could only read a full Canadian listing for the first two. The Canadian cargo-liner pages we found either wouldn’t load, had no product details, or were out of stock, so no liner is recommended here.
Measure your back seat first. Two of these makers say so themselves.
Kurgo’s hammock page tells you to measure the bench seat from left to right and warns that the cover may not fit large trucks or SUVs. Its bench cover is made for bench seats only, not bucket seats. The picks below are sorted by style, then by price.
Top Paw Waterproof Canvas Hammock Seat Cover
A canvas hammock with a waterproof backing that PetSmart says “protects from slobber, scratches and spills”. It adds a barrier to stop the dog climbing into the front, zippers so a person can still sit in the back, and side flaps for extra protection. Side vents and slits are meant to keep the seatbelts working. The listing doesn’t say how it attaches, so check the box or the maker’s instructions.
- Cheapest hammock of the three
- Safety barrier and adjustable zippers
- Side flaps cover the seat edges
- No anchoring details on the page
- No care instructions on the page
- 185 reviews are counted but no review text is shown, so we can’t report owner themes
Kurgo Heather Dog Hammock
Homes Alive lists it as “waterproof and stain-resistant”, a barrier against fur, mud and dirt. It has multiple attachment points, a Beach Beans anchor cover and underseat paracord for extra securing, plus hook-and-loop openings for seatbelts and latches. A centre zipper folds down to make room for a person. Remove the headrest straps and it works as a single back-seat cover.
- Most detailed anchoring of the three hammocks
- Centre zipper for a passenger
- Carrying bag included
- Maker says it may not fit large trucks or SUVs
- Hand wash or spot clean, then air dry
- No reviews on the page
Ruffwear Dirtbag Vehicle Seat Cover
Ruffwear describes it as “durable, waterproof and tear-resistant”: 300D polyester ripstop with a TPE waterproof back coating. It fastens with side-release buckles and web loops around the headrests, and the back coating is non-slip. Use it flat as a seat cover, or convert it to a vented hammock that protects the backs of the front seats. The page promises full access to seatbelts.
- Seat cover or hammock in one product
- Machine washable: cold, gentle, straps removed
- Storage bag included
- Priciest of the five
- One size and one colour only
- No reviews on the page
Top Paw Waterproof Canvas Rear Bench Seat Cover
The cheapest cover here: a canvas bench cover with the same waterproof backing wording as the hammock. It comes with adjustable straps and side vents and slits so seatbelts work normally. The page lists it as exclusive to PetSmart.
- Lowest price of the five
- Adjustable straps, belt slits
- Covers the seat only, so passengers still fit
- No floor or front-seat coverage
- No anchoring or care detail beyond the straps
- 157 reviews are counted but no text is shown
Kurgo Rover Bench Seat Cover
A double-stitched polyester bench cover that Homes Alive says is waterproof and stain-resistant, held by front and rear attachments. It has several seatbelt, harness and car-seat access points, edge piping meant to keep dirt and water off the floor, and pockets for poop bags, toys or a leash. It fits bench seats only, not bucket seats.
- Pockets for gear
- Piping along the edges
- Front and rear attachments
- Not for bucket seats
- Care wording conflicts: the page says machine washable, but instructions say spot clean or hand wash
- No reviews on the page

Questions
Will the seatbelts still work?
Every maker listed here says so: Top Paw cites side vents and slits, Kurgo cites hook-and-loop openings or multiple access points, and Ruffwear promises full access to seatbelts.
Can I put the hammock through the wash?
It depends on the maker. Ruffwear says to remove the straps and wash cold on gentle. Kurgo’s Heather hammock says to hand wash or spot clean, then air dry. The Top Paw listing gives no instructions.
Will a bench cover fit a bucket rear seat?
Kurgo says its bench covers are for bench seats only, not bucket seats. Check your rear seat first.
How we chose
We looked for hammock, bench and cargo-liner covers sold on Canadian stores, then read each maker’s or retailer’s page for materials, size, anchoring, seatbelt access and the exact waterproof wording. “Waterproof” here is always the maker’s word, not our finding. We haven’t tested these covers ourselves. Most pages show no review text, so we don’t report owner themes. We left out the cargo liners we found because we couldn’t read a full Canadian product page for any. We don’t accept free products in exchange for picks, and none of the links on this page earn us a commission.
